SERVICES RUSH Mentoring
RUSH Mentoring is a 1 on 1 Mentoring Program specifically designed to positively impact young people with mentoring from their local community. The program has been successfully run throughout Australia with great testimonies of how much difference can be made when a mentor from the local community partners with a local child or youth for just 1 hour each week for 1 year. This 1 hour of contact time can be scheduled both during and after school hours depending on the requirements of each student and their school.NeedNever before have we lived in a society where young people have had a greater need for Role Models and Mentors in their lives. MentorsRUSH Mentors are asked to commit to a minimum of 1 hour of contact time with a student each week for a period of one year. The contents of this contact time is quite flexible and can include activities such as tutoring, help with homework, kicking a football, learning music or simply 'hanging out' and talking. Mentors are sources from the local community and are subject to numerous Child Protection strategies including a National Police Check and Blue Card suitability before they are involved in any type of interaction with students.Mentees -- StudentsRUSH Mentees are chosen by their individual schools based on simple assessments from teachers, guidance officers or other applicable school support staff. Students are generally chosen because the school believes that they would greatly benefit from the involvement of a Mentor in their current situation. If you would like more information or would like to be involved in our next 'Mentor Training Day' please Contact Us.
Food Assistance
Every week we are in communication with hundreds of families from all over Brisbane through our connections with School Chaplains and Welfare Departments within 30 Primary and Secondary schools surrounding Brisbane. By developing these networks we source, prepare and distribute Food Assistance for up to 400 people each week by distributing up to 80 Food Assistance Packages generally worth between $50 and $100 each week.NeedThe most recent statistics from the Australian Council of Social Service show that 11.1% of the Australian Population or 2.2 million Australians are living in poverty. Although this is very low compared to third world countries, it is a statistic that is often shocking and surprising for the average Australian. In addition, the latest statistics show that a total of 862,000 household throughout Australia face 'Housing Stress' which in turn provides increased pressure on relationships, parenting and health issues relating to stress. Each Food Assistance Package that we distribute contains general groceries or 'staples' such as Breakfast Cereal, Rice, Pasta, Pasta Sauce and other items that are nutritious and long lasting. We are also able to provide Fresh Fruit and Vegetables each week thanks to ongoing weekly support from the 'James Street Markets' in Fortitude Valley. We are constantly looking for Support in the areas of Food Sourcing, Distribution, Packaging and Delivery as well as Sponsors to assist with the constant growth and development of this program.
Mainly Music
Mainly Music is an Internationally recognised program that was developed in New Zealand to encourage interaction between parents and their children through the medium of music. The program is designed for children of pre-school age (6months - 5 years) and was developed to help parents interact with their children and their local community and meet other mothers from their local community.Need Many new mothers feel isolated and unsure as they enter a new stage in their lives and often feel as though they are alone and unable to cope. Additionally, many mothers face the symptoms of Post-Partum Depression which can often increase feelings of isolation and can lead to difficulties with engaging with their children and managing 'child well-being' tasks. With more programs such as Mainly Music being available in the local community; new mothers are able to meet with other mothers facing similar circumstances and engage in fun and and interactive ways with their children.Mainly Music currently runs from our 17 Mile Rocks Venue at 308 Seventeen Mile Rocks every Thursday during the school term from 9.30am - 11am. Each session includes 35-45 minutes of singing, dancing, interaction and music and costs just $3 per child or $5 per family (2 or more children). We are currently planning a Mainly Music program in the Northern Suburbs of Brisbane to be running each week in 2012. To be involved in Mainly Music program or if you are simply looking to attend one of our Mainly Music sessions, please Contact Us for more details.
School Breakfast Supply
Each week Metro Community Care provides School Breakfast Supplies to Primary and Secondary schools all over Brisbane. Many Chaplains and School Welfare Departments provide school breakfasts to their students every day to ensure that they have adequate nutrition to get through their studies.NeedResearch has shown that up to 26% of adolescents miss breakfast on a daily basis; this is especially prevalent in homes that are under economic or financial stress. This is extremely important when considering that research also shows that students that eat breakfast have improved short-term memory function and increased alertness which helps to facilitate learning and efficiency at work or school. In partnership with Foodbank Queensland we are able to provide Breakfast Supplies to schools throughout Brisbane to programs that feed up to 400 students each week. These supplies include Full Cream Milk, Breakfast Cereals, Bread, Muffins, Crumpets, Juice, Spreads and Milo. We are constantly looking for Sponsors to assist with our School Breakfast Supplies as well as Volunteers to help us with Food Collection and Delivery. Please follow the links provided or Contact Us to be involved in providing breakfasts to disadvantaged school students from all over Brisbane.
